Olivia Berkey is a ceramic and performance artist whose work is currently on exhibition at the Taos Center for the Arts' 40 Under 40 art show, on display in the Encore Gallery through September 8th, 2024.
While a student at a residential craft school in North Carolina, she participated in some informal, community-based instruction on a floor loom. Largely, though, she has casually experimented with knot-making, net-making, and other textile techniques — both on and off of looms.
She has had a very long term interest in gaining instruction in weaving and loom-involved textile work, but has not found many opportunities to do so in a way that is accessible and flexible with work schedules.
Says Olivia, "I have long since admired weaving and textile work for its generational, spoken, and storytelling traditions, and so for that reason have also been interested in pursuing weaving instruction that is reliant on community interaction and support — as well as place-based history and appreciation.
