Liana Hoffman is a Taos based artist who has been playing with some form of fiber arts for most of her life. Her grandmother was a seamstress who introduced her to sewing, crochet and knitting, and taught her the skills needed to sit and learn how to work with yarn and cloth. Liana put fiber crafts aside for decades to pursue a career in Culinary Arts and only recently did she pick back up where she left off as a child.
The pandemic influenced her to pick up yarn and thread again and she relearned how to crochet and taught herself the intricacies of hand embroidery. It was only after searching for local wool stuffing for her crochet projects, did she discover the Española Valley Fiber Arts Center and instantly fell in love.
She had always wondered how weaving worked and wanted to know the ins-and-outs of setting up a loom, so she immediately signed up for a class taught by Emily Trujillo. Ever since then, Liana has been hooked on weaving; even getting her own loom to immediately start playing at home.
She’s since taken several more classes at the Fiber Arts Center and continues to teach herself new techniques and play with color and texture.
She’s taken several project commissions and one of her weavings is currently on exhibition at the Taos Center for the Arts' 40 Under 40 art show, on display in the Encore Gallery through September 8th, 2024.
She is thrilled to be part of the Rio Grande Weaving Cohort, and hopes to take her weaving practice outside of her small spare room, and into a larger community of weavers.
Liana Hoffman is the new Culinary Arts Program Lead at UNM-Taos!
