Kristy Voorhees feels very connected to weaving. "It’s very meditative," she says. "I love studying history and art, and I moved to New Mexico with the intention of learning and studying the history and culture of the Southwest and weaving."
She is interested in Rio Grande weaving traditions because of the rich history, and she thinks it's important to keep the knowledge alive. "In what I have read about the history," Kristy says, "Rio Grande weaving is about learning from different cultures and sharing. The Mexican, Diné, and Spaniard weavers learned techniques and processes from each other."
Many years ago, Kristy began her weaving journey by taking workshops at a craft center in Mississippi. The workshops were project-based and she used tabletop looms to weave scarves, towels, and a table runner.
She is currently taking a weaving class with Emily Trujillo and Lisa Trujillo in Española.
